🧬 What Is Albinism?

Albinism is a rare, genetically inherited condition that affects the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for the color of skin, hair, and eyes. There are two primary types of albinism:

• Oculocutaneous Albinism (OCA): Affects the eyes, skin, and hair.

• Ocular Albinism (OA): Primarily affects the eyes and is more common in males due to its X-linked inheritance pattern.

Both forms of albinism can lead to visual challenges that range in severity. Common vision-related symptoms include:

• Reduced visual acuity

• Light sensitivity (photophobia)

• Nystagmus (involuntary eye movement)

• Depth perception issues

• Struggles with contrast and glare

There’s also a spectrum of visual acuity differences among individuals with albinism, influenced by the specific type, gender, and genetic variation. These differences aren’t always visible—but they deeply affect how people experience and interact with the world.
